After adding a new seat finder feature to its client, PokerStars decided to increase the maximum number of tables players can run at the same time. In July, after six years of a four-table limit, PokerStars lifted the limit from four to six.
The new seat finder feature stops bumhunting and gives more breathing space for the recreationals, which solves the problem of PokerStars having to restrict the number of tables to preserve recreationals.
This restriction didn't make much sense for the business as it removed big-volume grinders from the site and reduced the rake and revenue it was earning.
It was an attempt to have fewer regulars and to create a better environment for the recreationals, but it was a big risk for something that wasn't guaranteed to help the recreationals. That also lowered the amount of high-stakes action, which is where the big rake comes from.
Now, after seeing the good results of six tables, revenue increase, more rake, and more players, PokerStars is continuing to raise the bar, and they are now raising the limit of tables to eight from six.
This is doubling the number of tables that were allowed on PokerStars for the last six years, and it may be a sign that PokerStars is returning to its old roots as the number one poker client in the world.
With the pace at which the changes are coming, we can hope we will get the old Supernova Elite rakeback system back and maybe return to markets where PokerStars previously operated and recently left.
PokerStars is Facing Heavy Competition
As we all know, GGPoker is the current market leader in online poker, but other sites like WPT Global and WPN Network (PokerKing, ACR, BCP) are slowly growing and taking a piece of the market.
But GGPoker is starting to have more problems and inconveniences for players, as the rakeback, rake, deposit, and withdrawal fees are becoming unfriendly to players and benefiting the site at the expense of its players. For example, if you want to deposit $1,000 on GGPoker, you will have to pay a fee of around $20.
PokerStars is also doing well as the second-biggest site, but some significant changes were necessary to prevent it from losing market share to other players. While these new changes are positive, there is still much work for PokerStars to do if it wants to return to previous highs.
